The early years: waiting tables, a call centre, and a first business of his own

The first ventures of Robin Rouquart

Origins5 min read

The instincts that later built The Mazi Group were formed early, in West Flanders: a teenager's security-camera trade, years of selling under pressure, and a first business of his own. None of it was glamorous, and all of it mattered.

How did Robin Rouquart start?

Long before Miami and long before the factories, there was a teenager in Ruiselede buying security cameras cheaply in China and reselling them at a profit in Belgium. It was not a business with a plan; it was learning to sell with his own money at stake.

"Carrying on after a no, and understanding exactly why someone says yes."

Waiting tables and a call centre

After that came work as a waiter, and a call centre where he sold ink cartridges over the phone. The work built the two skills that would decide everything later: carrying on after a no, and understanding exactly why someone says yes.

The call centre years. Selling ink cartridges over the phone, one no at a time.

Maison Willem Tell

His first real venture was Maison Willem Tell, which he took on and helped build into a successful B&B. He also holds a mandate at the Missault Group. These were the years in which it became clear he was not built to stay on anyone's payroll.

In 2018 he left for the United States, funded by a loan taken against the family home. What happened next is in From Ruiselede to Miami and back.

Later, in America: 3D scans of houses. The technology worked; the market was not ready.
